Church Alert: Is your church protected against theft of lead?
Church buildings across the UK continue to be targeted by thieves seeking lead and other metals with high scrap value. These materials are stripped from roofs, guttering and other areas around the church premises often leaving the building exposed to the elements and risks of further damage from rain, wind and vandalism.
We advocate that prevention is better than the cure and whilst you may feel that your church is not at risk it is advisable to take some preventative measures to protect your building.
Please visit our Church Alert website www.churchalert.co.uk - this provides advice and practical suggestions on what you can do to help minimise the risk of metal theft. General tips and guidance are offered, such as the use of anti-theft paint, enhanced lighting and defensive planting of thorny bushes. Posters, leaflets and information can also be downloaded which will help you and your community remain vigilant against theft of metal.
Margaret Slater, Marketing Manager at Congregational & General said: “There has been a general increase in metal theft, with thieves using technology such as Google Earth to identify targets. It is therefore more important than ever for churches to be as proactive as possible to prevent theft. We believe that by taking some positive actions and by encouraging those living in close proximity to a church to be their eyes and ears, churches can help protect themselves from this type of theft.”
